Privacy Policy
Effective
The short version
- Golf Swing Diary is a Mac app with no account, no sign-in, no advertising and no tracking.
- Your videos, your diary, your notes and your students’ details stay on your Mac, and in your own iCloud if you keep iCloud sync on. We cannot read any of it.
- The app sends us something only in three cases: crash and error reports, if you say yes; feedback you choose to send; and confirmation of a purchase made through the App Store.
- You can change your mind at any time in Settings › Privacy, and you can ask us to delete anything we hold by writing to support@argfab.ai.
Who we are
Golf Swing Diary is made by Argfab AI (Grant Trimble) in Cape Town, South Africa. Under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) we are the responsible party for the information this policy describes, and our Information Officer is Grant Trimble; under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) we are the controller. Write to us about anything in this policy at support@argfab.ai.
What stays on your Mac
Everything you make with the app is yours and lives on your Mac: the swing videos you import or record, the sessions and notes in your diary, the transcripts and summaries the app writes, the drawings on your videos, the students you add from Contacts, and your settings.
The app’s transcription and summaries run on your Mac, using speech and language models the app downloads (see “Model downloads” below). Nothing you record or write is sent to an AI service, to us, or to anyone else.
When you choose to send a student an email, the app drafts it in Mail for you to look at and send yourself. The app sends no email of its own.
Photos, Contacts and the microphone
The app asks macOS for access to Photos only to import the videos you choose, to Contacts only to add the students you choose, and to the microphone only to record your commentary during a session. What it reads stays on your Mac. You can take any of these permissions away in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
iCloud
The diary syncs between your Macs through your own iCloud account. It is on by default and you can turn it off in Settings. Only you, through your Apple Account, can read what is in it: Apple does not give us access to your private iCloud data, and we have no way to see it. Apple’s handling of iCloud is described in Apple’s Privacy Policy.
What the app collects
Everything in this section is voluntary. Say no to reports and send no feedback, and the app works exactly the same. No law requires us to collect any of it.
Crash and error reports — only if you say yes
The first time the app runs it asks “Help Improve Golf Swing Diary?” Nothing is sent before you answer. If you choose Share Automatically, then when the app crashes, quits unexpectedly or recovers from an error, it sends us a report. If you choose Don’t Share, nothing is ever sent, and the app will not ask again.
A report contains:
- what happened: the error details and stack traces, the last part of the app’s diagnostic log, and Apple’s own diagnostic data about the crash;
- the app’s version, the macOS version and the model of Mac;
- an anonymous device identifier, so that the same problem from the same Mac is counted once;
- how playback is set up on your Mac: its measured playback speed and your playback settings.
Names, folders and email addresses are removed from a report before it leaves your Mac. A report never contains your videos, your diary or your contacts. Settings › Privacy shows you the last report that was sent, and lets you turn reporting on or off at any time.
We use these reports for one purpose: to find and fix defects in the app. Reports go to our server, which runs on Amazon Web Services in the United States.
Feedback you send
Help › Submit Feedback sends us what you write, the kind of feedback you chose, and, if you give it, an email address so we can reply. You can also choose to attach the app’s diagnostic log, an Apple crash report, or screenshots and images. With it go the app’s version, the macOS version, the model of Mac, the app’s language, the same anonymous device identifier, and how playback is set up on your Mac. The window says all of this before you press Submit.
We use feedback to answer you and to improve the app. It is stored on our server on Amazon Web Services in the United States, and a copy of your message, your reply address and the facts above is placed in our private issue tracker on GitHub so that we can act on it and reply.
Purchases
Subscriptions are bought through the App Store. Apple takes the payment and holds your billing details; we never see your card, your name or your email address. Your purchase is covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
To confirm that a subscription is active, the app sends our server Apple’s signed record of the transaction (the transaction identifiers, the product, the dates and the App Store environment) together with an identifier for this installation of the app. Our server keeps the current state of the subscription against that identifier so that the app can unlock what you have paid for.
Checking for the app’s settings and showing help
Each time it starts, the app fetches its configuration from our server, sending only its own version number and a signature that proves the request came from the app, with no identifier for you or your Mac. We count those starts, per version, as a total, so that we know how many Macs run each version when a defect appears. Help articles and videos are fetched from our help server when you open them.
Model downloads
The speech and language models that transcribe and summarise your sessions are downloaded from Hugging Face (huggingface.co), which sees your Mac’s internet address when it serves the files, as any website does. Nothing of yours is uploaded.
Internet addresses
Any request the app makes to our servers, to the help server or to Hugging Face carries your Mac’s internet (IP) address, as every web request does. Our servers keep request logs, with the address, for 30 days, for security and to keep the service running. This website itself sets no cookies and keeps no logs of visitors.
Who else sees it
We do not sell, rent or trade any information, and we show no advertising. The companies that help us run the app see only what is listed here:
- Apple handles the App Store, your purchases and your iCloud, under its own privacy policy and terms.
- Amazon Web Services hosts our server and stores the reports and feedback you send us, in the United States, under Amazon’s data processing terms, which include the EU’s standard contractual clauses.
- GitHub holds our private issue tracker, where a copy of each feedback message and its reply address is placed, in the United States, under GitHub’s data protection agreement.
- Hugging Face serves the model files the app downloads, under its own privacy policy.
Each of them is bound by contract to protect your information at least as well as this policy does, and may not use it for its own purposes. You can ask us for a copy of those commitments.
If you live in South Africa, note that these providers are outside the country, and if you live in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, note that they are in the United States. In each case the transfer rests on your consent (for crash and error reports), on the contract you have with us (for purchases and feedback), and on the providers’ contractual commitments above. We would also disclose information if the law required us to.
How long it is kept
- Crash and error reports, and feedback: 90 days from the moment they describe, after which they are deleted automatically from our server. Attached logs, crash reports and images are deleted on the same schedule. Backup copies of our database can hold a deleted row for up to 35 days more.
- Feedback in our issue tracker: until the matter is closed, and in any case deleted when you ask.
- Subscription state: for as long as the subscription, or the installation it belongs to, exists.
- Request logs: 30 days.
- Everything on your Mac and in your iCloud: as long as you keep it. Deleting the app’s data, or the app, is in your hands, and so is your iCloud.
Your choices and your rights
- Say no, or change your mind. Crash and error reporting is off unless you turn it on, and Settings › Privacy turns it off again at any moment. Withdrawing consent does not affect what was sent before you withdrew it, but you can ask us to delete that too.
- See what we hold, correct it, restrict its use, or have it deleted. Write to support@argfab.ai. Tell us the report ID the app showed you, or the date and time you sent the feedback, if you have them: we have no account to look you up by. We answer within 30 days.
- Complain. If you are not happy with how we handle your information you can complain to us first, and in South Africa to the Information Regulator (inforegulator.org.za; POPIAComplaints at inforegulator.org.za; +27 10 023 5200), or in the European Economic Area to your national data protection authority.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our legal bases are: your consent for crash and error reports; the contract between us for feedback you send and for subscriptions; and our legitimate interest in running a secure service for request logs. You also have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interest, and the right to data portability for information you gave us. We make no automated decisions about you.
Children
Golf Swing Diary is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has sent us information, write to us and we will delete it.
Security
Everything the app sends travels over an encrypted connection (HTTPS). Our server stores reports encrypted at rest, and only we can read them. Reports are scrubbed of names, folders and email addresses on your Mac before they are sent.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the new version is published here with a new effective date, and the app links to this page. A change that would let us collect more than this policy describes would be asked for in the app before it took effect.
